Rebuilding from ruins – Paul Pascaud – 4th-year Studio on Western Metropolitan Athens, Winter 2016
The project proposes to connect an existing and well established small-scale economic activity – the recuperation and reuse of existing building materials – to the future transformation of a former industrial area near Piraeus that is a part of the national railway lands. It is to be implemented in phases to allow for gradual growth, involving minimal expenditure at the start, gaining in importance with time. The objective is to provide a transitional form of activity for a currently unused site that is destined several years from now to be radically transformed following the sale of the national railway system and its assets to private interests. During the period of transition, the project would provide work while bringing visitors to the place for business and festive events, thus integrating it into city life. The proposed activity in the short term, it is hoped, would weigh upon the decisions made for the future use of the site as a part of the overall regeneration of Athen’s rail lands.
